New research indicates that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these medications should be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
