Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had allowed a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or did there exist a thread maintaining its structure from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, but then he to later acknowledge that the board had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were facing for fiscal problems. Speculation that he might quit were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club appeared equally disorganized in their performances as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to tell if they're getting better or imploding.

Matteo's Unforeseen Comeback

A single player kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio this season. He spent last season at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were attempting to remain there temporarily. The signing restriction forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Uncovering His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to identify the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
