A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these national projects.
